Burn test to identify if the silk is 100% pure (*Be careful when using a lighter*)
Silk, also known as mulberry silk, is widely favored by consumers because of its smoothness, softness, breathability, extensibility, and gentle touch experience.
However, there is a dazzling array of "real silk" products on the market, many of which are made of polyester or other chemical man-made fiber materials.
Because of the different processing technology, real silk feels different, and the current polyester alkali weight reduction process can imitate a silk-like feeling, thus it is hard to identify by the sense of touch.
So, how to determine if silk is genuine?
The burning test is the simplest and most convenient method. Use a lighter to burn the edge of the silk material, the real silk burns with the smell of singed hair or feather. The ash is fragile, brittle, fluffy, black, and can be easily crushed by hand. In case silk is artificial, such as rayon (viscose), it burns with a strong and weird chemical smell. The burning time is extremely fast. A small amount of off-white ash is produced.
